Asphalt nails - my DIY concrete nail!

So I've been seeing these new Nails Inc. polishes with concrete effect and I instantly remembered - I used to do similar effect myself. And so I made today - my outcome is really glittery, 2 color shine and looks like an asphalt spilled with oil xD Unfortunately my camera has absolutely no chance of showing the grainy texture and it sure probably hates me as well. Oh well.

Here's teh result:

I'm sorry as it's really messy :( But it's so cold outside that I don't want to abandon the bed and go find me some remover and sticks, it's literally +5 degrees C in the rest of the house.

What you will need:
1. Base nail varnish. Depends on your chosen color scheme. You can use any if you do dark colours. I used my Maybelline Colorama 165 as a base. You can use color matching your glitter or clear one. I recommend thicker ones.
2. Glitter. These are found in cheap cosmetics stores, drugstores or nail art stores, ebay, everywhere. It costs around 1$.
3. Top color. I chose very glitter Orly Galaxy Girl varnish which in one coat isn't black but dirty red/brown and has green/red glitter. Ordinary glossy finish is nice too, but you should also consider matte, should look cool.

How to:

Step 1 - Apply a coat of base nail polish. If it's very watery dab on some. Wait for like 10-20 seconds depending on how thick/fast drying your polish is.
Step 2 - Dab your finger in the glitter pot (I poured some in its lid for more comfortable dab) and very lightly touch the surface. Like a feather touch, very gently, don't smudge the layer. When you applied a little bit all over (dab, touch, dab, touch...) repeat it all over but now you can press your finger against the nail, just don't smudge it off, be gentle. Now you should have even glittery coverage as seen on picture below.

>< oh camera, why... While I was snapping all this it died 3 times xD

Step 3 - Heck, you don't need to wait for drying. Grab your top coat varnish in desired color and apply very thin layer. That will fix in the glitter layer and add color. Very thin layer is needed, I wiped the brush on both sides then applied and rubbed the varnish in slightly. (Ok it looked pretty barbaric. P.S. No varnish brushes were harmed!). That's all. Now you have a really harsh texture. If you find it way too sandpapery you can apply one more thin coat until desired texture reached.

  1. Ooo i love the look of this! I haven't tried wearing glitter on my nails but I think I'll have to give it a go sometime soon, especially as it seems like such a simple process xx

  3. Hi Gabrielle, just being curious, does it remain sticky since the nail polish is an asphalt?

    1. Nooo, it isn't an actual asphalt, it' dark glitter, which is dry and regular duochrome nail polish xD It has very rough finish, hence I named it like that.
